Young went down midway through United's 1-0 win
over Liverpool last weekend and was swiftly subbed
off.
Van Gaal confirmed the 30-year-old has suffered a
"severe" groin problem and will go under the knife.
The former Aston Villa star was filling in a right-back
at Anfield and was replaced by academy product
Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.
Young has made just 23 appearances for United this
season and joins Phil Jones and Bastian Schweinsteiger
in missing Saturday's home clash with Southampton
(3pm).
